How to Create an Assignment Playlist for Your Students

Updated on

This user guide will show you how to create an assignment playlist for your students.  Using playlists allows you to combine two or more lesson components into one list of assignments that can then be assigned to your students all at once.  This allows you to monitor students' progress for a set of assignments rather than having to assign and monitor several individual lesson components.

-----------------------------------------------

Building an Assignment Playlist is easy.  As you browse EduSmart Lesson Components, look for the "Playlist" icon.

-----------------------------------------------

Imagine that you have given your students initial instruction on physical properties of matter, and you would like to assign some online activities for they to complete to apply what they know.  You want to assign them an Interactivity, a Science Investigation Activity, and a Simulation, but you want to group those three activities into one assignment rather than assigning three separate lesson components. The Playlist tool allows you to group these activities together so you only make one assignment that contains three separate lesson components. You select "Interactivity" to begin building your Assignment Playlist.

-----------------------------------------------

Select the "Playlist" icon.

-----------------------------------------------

In the upper right corner of the screen, notice that the "Playlist" icon and counter now displays a "1" indicating that you have added a lesson component to your Assignment Playlist.

-----------------------------------------------

To add the next Lesson Component to your Assignment Playlist, use the breadcrumb trail and select  "Online Activities" to go back to the previous screen.  You can use the breadcrumb trail to navigate to different locations, even to a different unit or reporting category.

-----------------------------------------------

Find the next Lesson Component you want to add to your Assignment Playlist (in this example, the Science Investigation Activity), select the "Playlist" icon, and verify that the "Playlist" counter in the upper right corner now shows "2" items.  In some browsers, you may have to scroll up to see the "Playlist" counter.

-----------------------------------------------

Find the third Lesson Component you want to add to your Assignment Playlist (in this example, the Simulation), select the "Playlist" icon to add it to the Playlist, and verify that the "Playlist" counter now shows a "3". You can repeat this process to add additional Lesson Components to your Assignment Playlist as desired.

-----------------------------------------------

Select the "Playlist" icon in the upper right corner of the screen to display the contents. You can use the hamburger icon by each Lesson Component to drag it to a new location on the list if you want to change the order. Select the "Create Assignments" button to continue.  Creation of "Live Lesson" playlists is covered in a separate User Guide.

-----------------------------------------------

The "Select Grade" and "Select Unit" fields are automatically populated with the current unit, but you can change those if you like.  The third field, "Select Subunit," is optional.  In this example, we selected the 5.5(A) subunit.  You must give your Assignment Playlist a title.  We recommend using the standard code at the beginning to make finding assignments easier by sorting.  We have selected the "Enforce Ordering" checkbox.  The forces students to work through the Assignment Playlist items in the order in which they occur.  This box is unchecked by default, which allows students to complete Lesson Components in your Assignment Playlist in any order. Select the "Add Instructions" icon if you want to include instructions for your students.

-----------------------------------------------

In the Assignment Playlist section, note that you can drag-and-drop Lesson Components to change the order.  You can use the "Add resource" button to go back and add additional Lesson Components if you wish.  You can also delete any Lesson Components if desired.  Once you are satisfied with your Assignment Playlist, select the "Save assignment" button.

-----------------------------------------------

Once your Assignment Playlist is saved, you will have options to Go to Workspace or Go to Content Library.  Your Assignment Playlists are saved in Workspace, so, for this example, we will select Go to Workspace.

-----------------------------------------------

In Workspace, you will see a list of all Lesson Components and Assignment Playlists you have set up.  You can see the Assignment Playlist titled, "5.5(A) Student Online Activities 9-29-2023," that we just created at the top of the list. Select the "Assign" icon to assign this Assignment Playlist to your students. If you need help assigning Lesson Components or Assignment Playlists to your students, there is a separate User Guide that covers that process.
